The Missile

Anyone looking for pictures of Haifa in recent years would probably come across a photo of a white, pointy, oddly shaped skyscraper, overshadowing a humble mosque with a clock tower minaret, made of local sandstone. Often titled with some “Old Vs. New” cliché, this picture became the popular image of Haifa, ever since the building was erected in the early 2000s.

The Sadness of Haifa

I remember I was sitting alone in the night of the garage where I worked and lived, when an obscure sadness swept over me. I shall refer to this fit of sorrow by the name of the city, and give that sadness that has dogged me all my life its own special name- “the sadness of Haifa”.

The sadness of Haifa has no cause. It doesn’t come from anger at anything or because of the loss of something and it in no way resembles depression.

Throwback

These words are written in a time of crisis. They are written in a country where any time is a time of crisis, though for now we will not focus on the whole country, but rather on one city, the city of Haifa, my childhood hometown.
